The Esdaile state used to be considered the deepest level of hypnosis. But in fact, currently the Sichort state seems to be the deepest level. The Hypnosis state is where the conscious Mind is far far down on the hierarchy of input.
We all have experienced Sichort – usually in sleep. But sometimes when you are bone tired, and you close your eyes. And disappear and then wake up not quite sure where you are or how much time has passed.
The Sichort state, because most of the conscious mind is at peace, allows for fast deep physical healing
Back to Esdaile
Historical Background
- James Esdaile: The state is named after James Esdaile, a 19th-century surgeon who utilized hypnosis for surgeries in India when no anesthetics were available.
- Dave Elman: The state was later used named by Dave Elman, who contributed to the understanding and techniques of hypnosis.
- Jerry Kein: Followed Dave Elman and used Esdaile a lot in his teachings
Esdaile: It is characterized by significant insensitivity to pain and touch, which allows for the possibility of performing surgical procedures without the use of traditional anesthesia.

A general anesthetic is a series of chemicals that in effect, stop information being passed through your system: brain, neurons, nerves etc. It is not like a sedative, which calms down the central nervous system. A General Anesthetic is as if you have stopped. The vital organs, lungs, heart etc keep going, but for everything else it is as if your body functions have come to a halt
General anesthetics, typically elicit several key reversible effects: immobility, analgesia, amnesia, unconsciousness, and reduced autonomic responsiveness to noxious stimuli. (Wikipedia)
Esdaile certainly produces an analgesic state, but you are very aware of what’s going on around you, there is no amnesia, and you do have immobility. But as you are aware of what’s happening – if there is any threat or emergency you can elevate out of the state and be back to full consciousness and mobility instantly
Remember all hypnosis is self hypnosis, the person agrees to allow the Esdaile state. And so at any time they can choose to unallow
Because the Esdaile state is a deep state, and the conscious Mind does not like being pushed aside, it often takes a awhile, sometimes multiple sessions to have a person achieve Esdaile. With James Esdaile himself, it typically would take 7 days, by using a form of mesmerism
Dave Elman could achieve it, with those who allowed it – in a few minutes. Dave Elman introduced this process to doctors and dentists
The thing about the Esdaile state , though it a good state for pain removal and immobility, – it seemed it was impossible to communicate with the Client. They could hear you but couldn’t be bothered to respond. And were quite happy to stay in the state and ignore the practitioner until it suited them
Ines Simpson, with the Simpson Protocol, was ( as far as we know) the first person to open communication in Esdaile by the simple act of keeping one arm out of the Esdaile state and using the hand on the arm to communicate with ideomotor responses.
Also following Dave Elman and Jerry Kein – she could create the Esdaile state in a client in just a few minutes -and communicate. Which was why the Simpson Protocol was originally called ‘Working in the Esdaile State and Beyond’
To achieve Esdaile using Simpson Protocol, it’s just a matter of asking what is called the SuperConscious to take the client to the Esdaile state, if they are open to it. You can also ask to have all blockages and resistance taken away. A person may want to experience the state but have fears and reservations about going there. With the Simpson Protocol, that can all be taken care of in the first few minutes of a session
Characteristics of the Esdaile State
| Feature | Description |
| Depth of Hypnosis | A deep state of Hypnosis. Though as in all states there are levels, everything is on a grade. Light Esdaile, Medium Esdaile and deep Esdaile |
| Pain Insensitivity | Individuals experience analgesia (insensitivity to pain) |
| Touch Insensitivity | Individuals may experience anesthesia (insensitivity to touch) |
| Surgical Applications | Potential for performing operations without chemical painkillers. And for dental applications |
